Average: farm glossary
Average here means the arithmetic mean: the included values are added and divided by their count. It summarises those observations with one value in the same unit. The animals or materials included and the period describe what was averaged. A mean for one group can therefore describe a different set of observations from a mean for another group.
A farm example
Example: weights of 8 and 12 kilograms have a mean of 10 kilograms. The two weights are added and divided by two, which is the number of observations in this example.
Everyday use
HerdMobile’s dated farm records provide the quantities used in comparisons. Choosing the relevant observations allows the farmer to calculate an average for the intended animals, feed or period.
