Litre: farm glossary

A litre, commonly written L, is a unit of volume. It is used for liquids such as milk. A litre quantity describes space occupied by the liquid, while kilograms describe mass. Converting a milk volume to milk mass uses its density, so the original unit identifies which measurement was made.

A farm example

A milk sale recorded in litres measures the volume sold, whereas a laboratory or production report in kilograms measures mass. Comparing the two records requires noting which unit each figure uses.

Everyday use

HerdMobile stores entered milk quantities for farm production records. Reading the unit with the animal or group and recording period keeps the production amount and sale quantity understandable.
