Dry matter intake: farm glossary

Dry matter intake (DMI) is the amount of moisture-free feed an animal or group actually eats over a set period, usually per day. It equals the dry matter offered in the trough minus the dry matter left uneaten or lost.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

An intake estimate subtracts the dry matter left uneaten and lost from the dry matter offered. Dividing that total by the animal count and number of days gives the daily average per animal. Daily intake can be expressed as kg DM per animal per day.

Everyday use

HerdMobile’s ration plan shows amounts calculated from the selected feed values. Dated feed-use records and animal notes help follow the feeding carried out on the farm.

How HerdMobile helps
