Ration: farm glossary

A ration is the combination and amounts of feeds planned for an animal or group over a stated period, usually a day. It includes every selected forage, concentrate and supplement. The animal species, weight and production stage describe the group being fed. The nutrient contribution comes from the composition and daily amount of each ingredient.

A farm example

A daily ration can include silage, hay and compound feed. The ingredient list and amounts describe the plan; the amounts actually offered and eaten describe how feeding took place on the farm.

Everyday use

HerdMobile calculates a ration from the selected animal information and the farmer’s own feeds. The result brings daily feed quantities, nutrient information and feed cost together.
