Percent: farm glossary

Percent expresses a share out of a hundred and uses the symbol %. A percentage needs a whole to which it applies, such as total feed weight or dry matter. The whole determines what the resulting part means. A dry-matter percentage and a protein percentage of dry matter can therefore describe different stages of the same feed calculation.

A farm example

Example: 10% of 50 kilograms of feed is 5 kilograms, calculated on the same weight basis as the starting 50-kilogram amount.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed profiles label nutrient percentages with their basis. The daily ration uses these percentages with feed quantities to calculate the contribution of each selected ingredient.
