NDF: farm glossary

NDF means neutral detergent fibre. It measures a plant cell-wall fraction made up mainly of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. Commonly reported as a percentage of dry matter, it describes the structural fibre in an ingredient. The contribution to a ration is calculated from the NDF value and dry-matter amount of each feed.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: if a cow or sheep receives 4 kg of forage dry matter at 50% NDF, that forage contributes 2 kg of NDF to the daily ration.

Everyday use

HerdMobile includes feed NDF values in ration calculations. Reading NDF with protein, energy and other nutrients connects the fibre contribution with the full daily feeding plan.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
