Starch: farm glossary

Starch is an energy-supplying carbohydrate fraction measured in feed analyses. It is commonly reported as a percentage of dry matter. Grains and compound feeds can have different starch contents. The starch supplied in a daily ration is calculated from each feed’s starch percentage and the dry-matter amount included in the mixture.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: if a ration includes 3 kg of grain dry matter at 60% starch, that grain supplies 1.8 kg of starch to the daily ration.

Everyday use

HerdMobile includes the starch values of selected feeds in its ration information. This places starch alongside fibre, protein, energy and the amounts used in the daily plan.
