Colostrum: farm glossary
Colostrum is the first milk produced around birth and supplies nutrients and antibodies to the newborn. Its source, quality and the amount consumed are part of the first feeding information. Birth time and feeding time place those observations in the young animal’s early history. Offered feed and the amount actually consumed describe separate parts of that feeding.
A farm example
A calf’s note can identify the dam or colostrum batch, first feeding time, quantity consumed and any quality result. These details allow the next worker to see what care has already taken place.
Everyday use
HerdMobile animal notes help retain the first feeding alongside the birth. Feeding difficulty or an urgent newborn-care concern requires prompt veterinary attention before completing the record.
