Crude fat: farm glossary

Crude fat is an analytical feed fraction measured using solvent extraction. It is commonly reported as a percentage of dry matter. Read alongside protein, fibre, starch and minerals, it describes part of the feed’s composition. Daily fat contribution is calculated from the crude-fat value and the dry-matter amount of the ingredient.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: if an ingredient has 4% crude fat on a dry-matter basis and 2.5 kg of its dry matter is used in the ration, it supplies 0.1 kg (100 g) of crude fat per day.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed profiles include fat values where available. They are read with the other nutrients and daily amounts in the selected feeding plan.
