Lactation: farm glossary
Lactation is the period of milk production following the birth of offspring. It starts with birth and continues until milk production ends for that cycle. Days since birth place the animal in early, mid or late lactation, helping relate milk records to feeding needs.
A farm example
Illustrative records: a cow giving 38 L per day on day 45 after calving and 22 L on day 240 has two records from the same lactation. The observations are 195 days apart and describe production at different stages.
Everyday use
HerdMobile brings the birth history and entered milk quantities together in animal records. The dated information helps the farmer follow production over the period.
How HerdMobile helps
Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
