Metabolizable energy: farm glossary

Metabolizable energy, or ME, is the feed energy left after losses in faeces, urine and digestive gases are deducted from gross energy. It describes one stage in the use of feed energy by the animal. Feed tables report ME with an energy unit and weight basis, such as energy per kilogram of dry matter.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

A forage and a grain can supply different ME amounts per kilogram of dry matter. Multiplying each value by the dry-matter quantity gives the energy contribution from that ingredient.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed profiles include metabolizable-energy values. The energy name and unit identify the value used with the selected feed quantities in the daily ration calculation.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
