Milk yield: farm glossary

Milk yield is the milk produced by an animal or group over a stated period. It is recorded with a unit (such as litres or kilograms) and the milking interval it covers, such as a single milking or a full day. Individual cow yield, total group production, and milk sold are tracked separately because home-used milk (such as calf milk) is part of production but not sales.

A farm example

If 20 cows produce 480 L across the morning and evening milkings, average daily milk yield is 24 L per cow. If 450 L go to the bulk tank for sale and 30 L go to calves, 480 L is recorded as milk produced and 450 L as milk sold.

Everyday use

HerdMobile stores entered milk quantities so production can be followed on the phone. Dated animal and group information helps the farmer find the figures for the period being examined.
