Protein supplement: farm glossary

A protein supplement is a feed or product included to contribute protein to the complete diet. Oilseed meals are examples of ingredients used for this purpose. Each product also has other nutrients, such as fibre, fat and energy. Its protein contribution is calculated from its crude-protein value and the dry-matter amount included in the ration.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: 1.5 kg of dry matter from a protein supplement with 36% crude protein in dry matter supplies 0.54 kg (540 g) of crude protein.

Everyday use

HerdMobile combines the selected protein feed with the other ration ingredients. The daily calculation brings feed quantities, nutrient contributions and cost per animal into one feeding plan.
