Upper bound: farm glossary

An upper bound is the maximum value of a range, stated with the nutrient name, unit and weight basis to show what is capped. In a feed profile, a calculated upper bound shows the highest expected composition from that calculation, which is distinct from a laboratory test result measured on an actual feed sample.

A farm example

Illustrative range: a forage reference with crude fibre at 26% to 32% of dry matter has an upper bound of 32%. Within that range, 1 kg of dry matter contains at most 320 g of crude fibre.

Everyday use

HerdMobile’s feed reference pages identify calculated bounds and their units. Reading the upper and lower endpoints together helps the farmer understand the range displayed for a particular ingredient.
