Feed sample: farm glossary

A feed sample is the portion of a feed submitted for examination or analysis. The material comes from an identified batch, and the test result describes that sample. Sampling method matters because a bale, heap or silage store can contain variation. The batch and sampling date connect the laboratory result with the feed being considered for a ration.

A farm example

A hay sample from one delivery and a silage sample from another are separate samples. Each result belongs with its own feed identity and collection date.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed values can be updated from the analysis of the feed in use. The sample information explains which material those values describe when the daily ration is calculated.
