Average daily gain: farm glossary
Average daily gain is the change in live weight divided by the days between two weighing observations. Its unit is commonly kilograms per day. The later weight minus the earlier weight gives the change; the two weighing dates give the elapsed days. The result describes the animal’s average weight change over that particular interval.
A farm example
A calf weighing 62 kg on 1 May and 86 kg on 31 May gained 24 kg over 30 days, giving an average daily gain of 0.80 kg/day (24 ÷ 30) to review alongside its feeding and health notes from May.
Everyday use
HerdMobile’s dated animal notes help retain the original weights and dates. They provide the farm figures used in the growth calculation alongside the animal’s other events.
