Live weight: farm glossary

Live weight is the weight of a living animal at the time it is observed. It is commonly expressed in kilograms. The animal and weighing date connect the figure with that observation. Carcass weight describes the carcass, while body condition score describes body reserves, so each figure has its own role in animal and sale records.

A farm example

A young bull weighed at 520 kg live weight on sale day and sold on a live-weight price basis links the 520 kg measurement and weighing date directly to the agreed sale amount.

Everyday use

HerdMobile animal-sale records can retain live weight in kilograms with price information. Animal notes also help keep dated observations with the same animal’s earlier history.
