Breed: farm glossary

Breed is the specific type or strain recorded within an animal species, such as Holstein or Merino. It gives more detail than the species name alone. A dairy-cattle breed and a sheep breed belong to different species groups, and each animal still has its own weight, production stage and measured output. Those individual details complete the information used for farm planning.

A farm example

A Holstein and a Jersey can both be cattle on the same farm. Their breed names describe the recorded type; the farmer’s own milk and weight records describe the individual animals.

Everyday use

HerdMobile animal cards hold breed information. Its breed library also shows sourced milk-composition references, which can be read with the animal information used to prepare a ration.
