Dry period: farm glossary

The dry period is the time between drying off a dairy cow and her next calving. During this stage the cow is outside the milking period and has her own feeding and care needs. Drying-off and calving dates mark the interval, while planned dates help organise preparation before the next birth.

A farm example

A cow dried off on 1 September and calving on 31 October has a 60-day dry period; during those 60 days she is removed from the milking line and fed a dry-cow ration rather than the lactating herd ration.

Everyday use

HerdMobile’s dated animal records help retain these events and preparations. The animal’s production stage is also part of the information selected when calculating a ration for the group.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
