Silage: farm glossary

Silage is feed preserved by fermentation with air kept out of the stored material. Maize and forage grasses are examples of crops used for silage. Its water is included in the weight placed in the trough. Dry matter describes the portion that supplies the feed’s nutrients after that water is excluded.

A farm example

Two silage loads with different moisture contents can have the same delivered weight but different dry-matter amounts. This changes how their protein, fibre and energy contributions compare in a ration.

Everyday use

HerdMobile uses the selected silage values and quantities in the daily ration calculation. Its purchase price and stock amount bring the silage in the plan together with stored quantities and daily feed cost.

How HerdMobile helps
