Hay: farm glossary

Hay is a forage crop preserved by drying. Grass and legume hays, including alfalfa, belong to this group. The plant, harvest stage and storage conditions affect the feed that reaches the trough. Hay still contains some water, so its as-fed weight and dry-matter weight describe different parts of the same material.

A farm example

Alfalfa hay and grass hay are separate feeds. Each analysis describes the protein, fibre and other nutrients supplied to the ration. Hay from different harvests can form separate batches.

Everyday use

In HerdMobile, the chosen hay profile contributes its own values to the ration. Stock quantities link the feeding plan to the hay in store; purchase prices contribute to feed cost per animal.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
