Roughage: farm glossary

Roughage is the fibrous part of a livestock diet, including hay, silage and straw. Crop species, harvest stage and storage conditions affect its nutritional value. Roughages contribute different amounts of water, fibre, protein and energy, so each ingredient has its own nutrient profile in the HerdMobile feed library.

A farm example

Hay and wet silage can supply roughage in the same ration. Their weighed amounts include different amounts of water; dry matter provides a common basis for comparing their nutrient contribution.

Everyday use

In HerdMobile, selected roughages join the other feeds in the daily ration calculation. Their quantities and purchase prices also contribute to the feed cost per animal.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
