Grams per kilogram: farm glossary

Grams per kilogram, written g/kg, is a mass ratio describing grams of a component in a kilogram of material. It can be used for a feed nutrient or product declaration. The dry-matter or as-fed basis identifies the material in that kilogram. The unit expresses concentration, while daily supply also includes the amount of feed used.

A farm example

Unit example: 10 grams per kilogram is a mass fraction of 1%. Both describe the same component in the same material when the reporting basis is unchanged.

Everyday use

HerdMobile ration information uses named nutrient units. Converting g/kg and percentage values to a common basis helps the farmer use feed analyses with the quantities in the daily plan.
