Body condition score: farm glossary
Body condition score is an assessment of an animal’s body reserves using a named scoring system. It describes condition rather than live weight alone. The referenced dairy-cattle guide uses a 1–5 scale. Species, scoring scale, date and observer identify the assessment and allow later observations to be compared using the same method.
A farm example
Illustrative observation: a cow scored at 3.5 at calving and 2.5 later in the same lactation has lost 1.0 condition-score point on that scoring scale. The dated scores sit alongside milk, feed and health notes.
Everyday use
HerdMobile’s dated animal notes provide a place for condition observations with the animal’s history. The scale and production stage help the farmer follow changes between checks.
