Manganese: farm glossary
Manganese is a trace mineral labelled Mn in feed analyses. Its symbol distinguishes it from magnesium, which is written Mg. A manganese value describes the element’s concentration in the analysed material, with its unit and reporting basis. The figure for a mineral ingredient and the figure for the complete ration refer to different materials.
Compiled from open-access scientific sources.
A farm example
Multiplying a product’s manganese concentration by the amount fed on the same weight basis gives its manganese contribution to the ration. Other feeds can also contribute manganese, so their values form part of the full dietary total.
Everyday use
A mineral product and a complete ration can have different Mn concentrations. Each ingredient’s daily contribution uses its own concentration and the amount fed on the same dry-matter or as-fed basis.
How HerdMobile helps
Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
