Magnesium: farm glossary

Magnesium is a mineral element written as Mg in feed reports. This chemical symbol names the element; the lowercase unit mg means milligrams. A magnesium concentration therefore has both an element name and a measurement unit. The value can describe a feed, a mineral product or the combined diet, depending on the material analysed and the basis shown.

A farm example

A magnesium-containing ingredient has a total product weight and a specific magnesium percentage. Because that percentage determines how much magnesium enters the ration, two products weighed out at the same kilogram amount will supply different amounts of magnesium if their concentrations differ.

Everyday use

Magnesium supply is calculated from the concentration and the feed amount on the same dry-matter or as-fed basis. Adding the contributions from every ingredient gives the full ration’s magnesium supply.
