Calcium: farm glossary

Calcium is a mineral element shown as Ca in a feed analysis. A calcium value describes how much of that element is present on the stated weight basis. In the feed library it can be expressed as a percentage of dry matter. The daily supply depends on that concentration and the dry-matter amount of each feed eaten.

A farm example

Hay, compound feed and a mineral ingredient can each contribute calcium to the same ration. Their contributions are added using matching units and the quantities of the feeds used.

Everyday use

HerdMobile includes feed calcium values in ration calculations. The calcium percentage describes the ingredient; the complete ration brings the selected ingredients and their daily amounts together.
