Potassium: farm glossary

Potassium is a mineral element shown as K in a feed analysis. Its concentration describes the potassium present in the analysed material on the stated basis. The value for an individual forage or compound feed is one contribution to the full diet. Multiplying concentration by the matching feed amount gives the contribution from that ingredient.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

Two forage batches can have different potassium concentrations. Even if their feeding weights are similar, their potassium contributions depend on both those concentrations and the amount of dry matter supplied.

Everyday use

Daily potassium supply is the sum of the potassium from each feed. Each contribution is calculated from its concentration and the matching dry-matter or as-fed quantity.
