Straw: farm glossary

Straw is the dry stem material left after a cereal crop’s grain is harvested. Wheat straw is one example in the HerdMobile feed library. Straw contributes fibre to the ration and has its own protein, energy and mineral profile. Its role is considered alongside the other ingredients offered to the animal group.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

Multiplying bale count by representative bale weight gives the straw stock in kilograms. The nutrient calculation uses the straw’s dry-matter percentage and nutrient profile, linking stored straw with the amount used each day.

Everyday use

HerdMobile includes straw with the other selected feeds in the daily ration. The daily amount and purchase price are included in feed cost per animal.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
