Total mixed ration: farm glossary

A total mixed ration, or TMR, combines the planned ingredients into a mixture offered to an animal group. Forage, concentrates and supplements contribute their own nutrients and quantities to that mixture. The ration calculation sets the recipe, while weighing and mixing turn those planned ingredients into the batch delivered to the bunk. The amount offered and the feed left uneaten record the group's daily feeding.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: a mixer load with 1,000 kg of silage at 35% dry matter and 300 kg of concentrate at 88% dry matter weighs 1,300 kg as fed and contains 614 kg of dry matter.

Everyday use

HerdMobile calculates a ration from selected feed values and animal information. The resulting daily quantities and cost support the farmer’s feeding plan and feed-stock checks.
