Weighted average: farm glossary

A weighted average gives each value a contribution based on its share of the total. Each value is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and that sum is divided by the total weight. Larger quantities therefore have a larger effect on a quantity-weighted result than smaller quantities.

A farm example

When feed is bought in different lot sizes and prices, the purchased quantities serve as the weights in the average price calculation: each lot price is multiplied by its quantity, and the total cost is divided by the total quantity bought.

Everyday use

The method also explains how ingredient amounts affect a mixture’s composition. HerdMobile uses selected feed values and quantities in ration planning; a weighted comparison keeps each ingredient’s share in the calculation.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
