Denominator: farm glossary
A denominator is the amount by which another amount is divided. In farm calculations it may be kilograms, animals, days or a combination such as animal-days. It determines what a rate or average means. A cost per kilogram and a cost per animal use different denominators, even when both begin with a money total.
A farm example
In feed comparisons, the kilogram can mean as-fed weight or dry matter. Converting the denominator changes the basis of the price, while the original purchase still describes the same feed delivery.
Everyday use
HerdMobile uses feed quantities and animal information in ration and cost calculations. The denominator explains how group spending becomes a daily or per-animal figure.
How HerdMobile helps
Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
