Iron: farm glossary

Iron is a mineral element labelled Fe in feed reference tables and analyses. The reported value shows the iron content of the analysed feed or the feed described in the reference table. It is a concentration with its own unit and dry-matter or as-fed basis. The quantity supplied by an ingredient depends on both that concentration and the amount of feed used.

A farm example

An iron value for one feed and an iron value for a complete mixture describe different samples. To find the total iron in the ration, multiply each ingredient's iron concentration by its feed amount on the same dry-matter or as-fed basis and add the contributions together.

Everyday use

Reference table Fe values and laboratory analysis Fe values apply per unit of weight on a specific dry-matter or as-fed basis; the daily ration total combines the iron supplied by every forage, concentrate and mineral ingredient at the amounts fed.
