Milk fat: farm glossary
Milk fat is the fat component of milk, commonly reported as a percentage in a milk analysis. While the percentage shows the fat concentration of the sampled milk, daily fat yield in kilograms depends on both the fat percentage and daily milk yield. Recording the sample date alongside the cow, group, or bulk tank links the test result to the right milk record.
A farm example
At 25 kg of milk per day, a milk-fat test of 4.0% equals 1.00 kg of daily milk fat (25 × 0.04), whereas the same 25 kg at 3.6% fat equals 0.90 kg of milk fat (25 × 0.036).
