Sample date: farm glossary

Sample date is the day a feed sample is taken from a pile, bunker or batch for analysis. The laboratory report date is the day the results are issued and can be later. Together, the feed batch and sample date link the test results to the specific feed on hand at that time; a new delivery or fresh sample carries its own sample date.

A farm example

Illustrative dates: corn silage is sampled from a bunker on 10 October and the laboratory issues the report on 14 October. The sample date is 10 October; the dry-matter and protein results describe the silage sampled that day.

Everyday use

When feed values are used in HerdMobile, the sample information identifies the analysis behind those values. It helps the farmer associate the nutrient figures with the feed currently being used.
