Milligrams per kilogram: farm glossary

Milligrams per kilogram, written mg/kg, is a mass ratio. It states how many milligrams of a component are present in one kilogram of material. The material may be dry matter or the product as offered. That basis belongs with the unit because a kilogram of dry matter and a kilogram of wet feed contain different amounts of water.

A farm example

A copper figure in mg/kg dry matter gives copper per kilogram of feed dry matter. Multiplying by the dry-matter amount used gives the copper supplied by that feed.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed profiles show copper with its unit. The selected feed quantities and species information allow copper to be considered across the complete ration, including sheep-specific checks.
