Zinc: farm glossary

Zinc is a trace mineral represented by Zn in feed-composition data. The zinc content of a feed or mineral product is expressed per unit of weight, on a dry-matter or as-fed basis. Daily zinc supplied comes from multiplying the labelled zinc content by the amount of feed or supplement consumed, since the full product weight also includes carrier and other ingredients.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

A label can express zinc in milligrams per kilogram. Multiplying that value by the feed quantity on the same dry-matter or as-fed basis gives the daily zinc supplied by that ingredient.

Everyday use

The full ration’s daily zinc supply combines the zinc supplied by forage, compound feeds and supplements at their daily feeding amounts.
