Ash: farm glossary

Ash is the total inorganic mineral residue left after a feed sample is burned in a laboratory. It is commonly expressed as a percentage of the sample or dry matter. Ash describes that residue as a whole. Individual minerals, including calcium and phosphorus, have separate values in the feed’s composition.

Compiled from open-access scientific sources.

A farm example

Illustrative calculation: a forage analysis showing 9% ash on a dry-matter basis means 90 g of every 1 kg of forage dry matter is total inorganic residue—including nutritional minerals like calcium and phosphorus as well as any soil or sand contamination.

Everyday use

HerdMobile feed profiles show ash and individual nutrient values where available. Ash describes the overall mineral residue, while the daily ration uses the selected feeds’ individual nutrients and amounts.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
