Feed moisture: farm glossary

Feed moisture is the water contained in a feed on the stated reporting basis. On an as-fed percentage basis, water and dry matter make up the whole feed weight. The weighed feed includes both portions. Moisture therefore affects the amount of dry matter supplied by a kilogram of feed and the cost comparison between wet and dry ingredients.

A farm example

Two silage batches with different moisture can have the same as-fed weight. The wetter batch supplies less dry matter in that weight; its nutrient contribution follows the dry-matter amount.

Everyday use

In HerdMobile, the feed’s dry-matter percentage connects as-fed quantities with nutrient calculations. The same distinction helps compare the purchased weight with the ration’s dry-matter supply.

How HerdMobile helps

Bring your animals, feed stocks and farm accounts together on your Android phone. HerdMobile keeps your daily work moving offline: record events, compare feed quantities and follow sales and payments in one place. Use your own feeds and herd information to prepare a ration, then keep a backup file under your control.
