Milk true protein: farm glossary

Milk true protein is milk protein expressed with non-protein nitrogen excluded from the reported protein quantity. Milk lab reports usually express it as a percentage and label whether the figure is true protein or total (crude) protein. Recording the sample date and the cow, group, or bulk tank ties the test result to the matching production record.

A farm example

A cow producing 30 kg of milk per day with 3.2% true protein on the lab report yields 0.96 kg of true protein per day (30 × 0.032), excluding non-protein nitrogen such as milk urea.
