Price per kilogram of dry matter: farm glossary
Price per kilogram of dry matter is the feed price for the weight left after water is removed. Dividing the as-fed kilogram price by the dry-matter fraction gives this price. It makes wet and dry feeds comparable by their dry weight. Protein and energy supplied in that dry weight are also part of choosing a feed.
A farm example
Wet pulp contains more water than dry hay or grain. Converting their prices to dry matter shows the price of the dry feed purchased in each case, rather than the water included in the delivery weight.
Everyday use
HerdMobile feed profiles show dry-matter percentages and nutrient values. They help compare ingredients before the farmer’s selected feed prices and quantities enter the daily ration cost calculation.
