Selenium: farm glossary

Selenium is a trace mineral shown by the symbol Se. Feed and mineral-product figures express its concentration with a measurement unit and weight basis. A label may report all the selenium in the product or the selenium added during manufacture. In ration calculations, total selenium covers both native feed selenium and supplemental selenium, whereas added selenium counts only the supplemental portion.

A farm example

A selenium value in milligrams per kilogram describes a concentration. The daily selenium supplied is calculated by multiplying the per-kilogram concentration by the amount of feed or supplement fed on the same weight basis.

Everyday use

The label identifies the animal species and feeding directions for a selenium supplement. The mineral total includes the selenium supplied by every feed and supplement in the ration.
