Import animal records from a CSV file

Import a checked animal list into one selected business and herd from the owner profile’s Bulk Animal CSV Import control. Prepare the column names shown by the app and review the import counts afterward. Use this form to add basic animal records in bulk; use backup ZIP and restore for a complete phone move.

  1. Back up and select the destination

Make a current backup before a bulk import. In the owner profile, find Bulk Animal CSV Import. The panel is available only when a business has at least one eligible herd. Check Business and Herd selection when their selectors appear. Every animal created in this import goes to the selected business and herd; check that destination before importing the file.

  2. Prepare the four displayed columns

Use the header ear_tag,species,sex,breed exactly as shown by the app. The parser requires the first three names and accepts breed as optional, but including all four follows the displayed format. Use plain CSV, not an XLSX workbook renamed with a CSV extension. Format ear tags as text in the spreadsheet to preserve leading zeros and the exact identifier when saving the CSV.

  3. Check values before choosing the file

For species, accepted examples include cattle, sheep and goat; for sex, female, male and unknown are supported. Check that each row represents a real animal and that any breed matches its species. This importer reads ear tag, species, sex and breed; extra columns do not restore birth dates, purchases, photos or event histories. Keep the source list so omitted information can be entered correctly afterward.

  4. Import once and reconcile the counts

Tap Bulk Animal CSV Import and choose the intended text file. The result reports created animals and skipped rows; valid rows can be created while other rows are skipped. Duplicate ear tags in the same business, blank ear tags and invalid values can cause skips. The panel shows summary counts rather than a complete row-error report. Check the animal list against your source before correcting and retrying.

Do not assume an import is all or nothing

Do not repeatedly import the whole file to repair one bad row without checking what was already created. A duplicate is skipped rather than used to update an existing animal. For a complete move to another phone, create a backup ZIP and follow the restore guide. Keep the original spreadsheet, the prepared CSV and the pre-import backup until you have reconciled the actual records and made a new backup.
