Ear tag must be unique within the business.
Another animal in the same farm already has this ear tag number. Find its existing record to keep the animal’s history together.
Why does this happen?
The check covers every herd in the same farm, including sold, deceased and archived animals. Leading and trailing spaces are removed and letters are compared as capitals. When editing an animal, its own record is excluded.
How do I check it?
Compare Ear tag number with the animal’s tag and farm documents, including any text filled in by a scan. Correct a typing or scanning mistake, review the form and tap Save.
If the number is correct, find it in the farm’s other herds and in sold, deceased or archived records. Compare the animal’s details. For the same animal, use its existing record to add the new information.
If another animal’s tag was entered incorrectly, make a backup. Open that animal with Edit Animal and correct Ear tag number from its own tag and documents. Keep the other details you want to retain filled in, save and check both records.
How do I verify the result?
Reopen the saved animal and check its tag, farm, herd and history. An animal already recorded keeps its earlier history on the same card.
How do I keep my records safe?
Keep both animals and their history while checking a duplicate. If documents give two animals the same number, confirm their identities before saving a correction. Moving herds or changing status still leaves both records in the farm.
